Mayor

I was elected Mayor for two terms

  • Each time running against 2 other people both times without a run-off.

  • Mustang is a city of over 20,000 people and located just west of Oklahoma City.

  • I dont really have political ambition, which means I don't want to be paid - just a belief everyone should serve.

  • In addition to Mayor, the city has  6 other councilmembers with a City Manager. (www.cityofmustang.com)

You never know what it means to be a Leader until you are thrust into it.  In this role, its an unpaid focal point for all the Cities success and failures directed at the most public person representing the council - the mayor.  You quickly learn about budgets, laws, interacting with employees, the public, businesses and more.

You learn to determine what to share with the public vs what is kept as part of organizational structure.  I was the first Mayor to ensure there was a venue (Facebook) for the public to interact - not everyone liked it (mainly those the negative feedback was aimed at) - but it exists today with over 13k members.  I also brought back while I was there video recording of meetings, to ensure there was a true record vs a paraphrased record of the meetings.

I welcomed the public, and did my best to encourage them to speak their mind, ensure they had a fair amount of time to speak it (even if it went over the limit), and try to address the issues, often playing devils advocate to the Council.  I would celebrate people and business's with recognition to promote civic interaction.

I helped bring back the City-wide Easter-Egg hunt (which was popular in my own youth).

Nothing is accomplished alone, it involves agreement from the council, employees and budget.  But a few things I had a hand in changed the face of Mustang in ways most will never know.

Bringing a Lowes to Mustang

Building of St. Anthonys Hospital in Mustang
The Armory facility in Mustang

Ensureing after 2 failures the baseball fields passed on the 3rd try

Expansion of the Library and Conference center in the City Community Center.

Bringing a Tractor Supply to Mustang into a delapitated portion of the City

Meeting and trying to help a lot of fantastic people
